TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My teaching style reflects the collective lessons learned from 30+ years of professional performance experience, and the wisdom gleaned from all of my many wonderful teachers.

I believe that if you are human, you can learn how to sing! In our daily lives we make all of the sounds that are necessary for singing. Once a student learns to how to elongate those familiar "communicative" sounds on the breath and in the pitch & rhythm patterns that their song requires, their singing voice becomes a rich and colorful extension of their own speaking voice. The sound is uniquely their own - not some imitative distortion. I believe that this authentic singing voice is what moves the audience and gives them goose bumps!

Here is my strategy:

I begin by first assessing each student's individual learning style (visual, aural, conceptual etc.) and then crafting a "game plan" to best suit their thinking patterns.

My method is based on science, anatomy and classical vocal pedagogy, but often times it might feel more like an improv class! We take sounds from real life -Moaning,Whining, Shouting, Hooting, Flirting etc. - and then relate where those sounds naturally occur in the various registers of the singing voice. I encourage students to think of using different "sound recipes." By varying the ingredients of breath pressure, vocal chord "weight", inner space, front/back resonances, and physical engagement of the entire body, students learn to make a variety of stylistic sound qualities. They can adjust these sound recipes to suit each song style - country twang, pop mix, musical theater belt, operatic legit etc. I also help students learn how to articulate without gripping and to identify healthy vocal choices which will enable them to endure the rigors of a demanding performance schedule. I use recording equipment to help students hear how they sound "outside of their heads". Having good quality "on the spot playback" accelerates the learning process because students learn how to listen and correct themselves - much like how a dancer makes use of the mirror. And it's so much fun! Many students then enjoy making demo recordings of their new improved sound!

REVIEWS from STUDENTS !

I'm so happy to let you know I booked the International tour of Beauty and the Beast

AND. I can't even tell you how much your lessons have meant to me in this journey. These past few years, taking on something entirely new like singing, has been really transformative in a lot of ways, and without your patience, guidance, knowledge and endless caring support I never would have gotten to the place of confidence and enjoyment I find myself in now. You are amazing at what you do and I am forever grateful to you for opening up this brand new world of performing to me.

Sending lots of love and wishes for a great summer.

All the best,

Kathy

Dear Jan,

If I could do it over again, I would have paid to spend 10am-6pm with

just you teaching me everyday. Not only did you open up a new vocal world for me

but you also helped me to start getting past the left side of my brain running

my confidence into the ground. You are one of the most energetic, caring,

intelligent, kind, and talented teachers I've ever had. Your methods are

brilliant and really help to relate to the reality of speech in daily life. You

don't stop at one method though. You continue to impart your knowledge any way

you can in order to give each student the opportunity to really understand. I

look up to you so much because of your incredible knowledge and talent, but most

importantly, your confidence and genuine care for others. I love that you aren't inhibited by anything and give it your all no matter what. There are so many things I can learn from you and I'm excited to continue working with you to soak up all of your goodness. Thank you again for everything. You will forever be an incredibly good influence on me as an artist but also as a person.

Most sincerely,

Jennifer Machen

The recordings that you shared are amazing!  Bill didn't even

recognize Nicholas'voice. We were both blown away!I was so happy! I cried.

I tear up every time I listen to them; absolutely incredible!  We will

definitely use them for high school admission submittals. The latest news

is that, with your help and support, Nicholas received Distinction on his ABRSM

Level 5 Vocal exam!  We just learned this yesterday.  Distinction is the highest

honor accorded for the ABRSM exams and a student needs to score at least 130/150

points on a very subjective exam.  Nicholas was thrilled when he told us over

the phone! Nicholas has really blossomed with your caring commitment. We really appreciate

all of your help!  Thanks!

Kathleen

Thanks a million!!

Sarah

jan,

i can't tell you how overjoyed and grateful I am. Your technique I believe is universal to the hard-wiring of the human mind. lol if so, than the musician/singer and creative songwriter has learned to process that information intuitively that way. anyways, at least for me it is beyond perfect and thank you so much!!+

Chris

We are excited too about Madeline getting cast as Ariel!  You are an amazing teacher and you have taken her so far in the past few years.  There is such a difference now in the way she sings. We appreciate all you have done.  She adores you and just loves learning from you!

Thanks again!

Tina

Jan!! Thank you!! You are the shaman of singing!

Sarah :)
